Scotland and Russia share a partron saint, but on St Andrew's Day, 2023 locals in the town of Dollar, Clackmannanshire chose to share Scotland's national day with Ukrainian refugees from across the Wee County. The day was an oustanding success, raising around £500 for Play Alloa and refugeee fanilies across Clackmannanshie. And it also united the local community and introduced our guests to one of Scotland's national days , and has them looking foward to the other one, Burns day on 25.01.2023. And our St Abdrew's Day cafe even helped put Dollar on the map, being the lead story in the following week's Alloa Advertiser, a young piper from the Dollar Academy pipe band, who tuned up to help us, centre stage.
12 Bridge Street is well known to locals of a certain vintage as an ironmongers shop from previous era. Now a residential flat, its internal layout and central location make it the ideal venue for Dollar's, and we believe Scotland's, first ever Cafe Ukraine. And with one side of the property looking out over Dollar's picturesque Burnside, its exterior vista offers floral surroundings that help make our Ukranian guests and cakemakers feel at home.
First, to help Alloa based Scotland for Ukraine fill the lorry it is sending to Kharkiv this Christmas.
But beyond acting as a drop of point for this invaluable initiative, that's kind of up to you. Because "CafeU kraine in Dollar " is precisely that: in Dollar. And what can be done, in a small flat and in a small town like Dollar, with barely 10 000 residents, can be done almost anywhere, And you don't need anyone.s permission, including ours. But if you want some friendly practical advice, some support, help with useful local , national and international contacts, we'd be keen to help.
But we ain't the UN! All our team are volunteers, who, like the tens of thousands hosting Ukranian families in the UK and beyond, want to do what we can to help Ukraine and Ukranians in their hour ot need
And by hosting a Cafe Ukraine, more was done than just raising valuable, funds to help Play Alloa support Ukrainian families this festive season: We helped integrate Ukranians into our community, and showed how, if we all just pulled together, did what we could, we could learn more about each other, enjoy home baked Ukranian cake, have a good tim. whilst helping keep the flame of resistance burning, even in a small Scottish Burgh thousands of miles from the war zone.
Now, as St Andrew's boss once said, " Go forth and multipy"'
